Vinarija Lakićević
Deep into the foggy mountains of Leposavic, the very north of Kosovo, lies the reputable Lakicević winery. Their wine-making, on par with the finest in the Old world, such as in Italy and France, blesses the indigenous and unique grapes of the Balkan region.
The long and dramatic history of the winery begins with the Orthodox priest, Lakić Lakićević, fleeing Turkish persecution in the end of the 17th century. Taking refuge on top of the ancient mountain, he established a winery under his family name that lives on to this day. He was given land from a Serbian monastery who had grown wine grapes there since the Middle ages. Here, grapes have been growing with terroir marked by intense growing degree days, a high and varying altitude of 450-550 meters with notably cold nights. The wine stock grows from everything on flat clay plots to rocky slopes, creating a complex and dynamic taste with rich acidities.
The winery, due to its high ambition and success in numerous prestigious international competitions, therefore enjoys being the cultural centrum of Leposavić. Tasting Lakićević wine is thus like tasting the very essence of Northern Kosovo itself.
